Women's Neurology Program, at the University of Toronto

 

Dr. Bui founded Canada's first and only Women's Neurology Fellowship training program, established in 2017 and co-directs the Fellowship program with Dr. Aleksandra Pikula. This program is a city-wide collaboration of major specialties including epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, headache and features Canada's only obstetrical neurology program. Important partner programs include sleep neurology, neuroendocrinology, medical obstetrics as well as obstetrical medicine.

Description: We offer an integrated one year subspecialty training to those interested to learn about neurological issues that occur at the different stages of women's lives from early adulthood, pregnancy, perimenopause, and aging. The focus of this program is to develop expertise in the management of four key pillars of neurological conditions with sex-specific focus: headache, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and cerebrovascular disease. Elective time will also be offered in sleep neurology, obstetrics/obstetrical medicine, neuroendocrine, neuromuscular and neuropsychiatry. During this time, the fellows will have an opportunity to generate research ideas while learning to apply sex- and gender- sensitive methods in health research. Fellows will participate in regular journal clubs and case-based discussions within each subspecialty based on their interest.This fellowship is offered to Neurology trained graduates.

Still early in your training and want to know more?

A 1-month elective is also available for residents in neurology or internal medicine interested in learning more about women's neurology. Residents will gain exposure to key specialties: epilepsy, headache, stroke and MS in the context of preconception counselling, fertility, pregnancy care and ageing.
